Antonelli vince Monza partendo diciannovesimo, e il passo dice che era anche il più veloceAntonelli wins Monza from nineteenth, and the pace says he was the fastest too

Winner, fastest man and whoever chased for the whole race: three lists, and at Monza for the first time in two races the first two coincide. Inside is what a clear track is worth to Antonelli, how much the tow hid of Norris, and the answer to the question left at Zandvoort about Ferrari.

Che cosa è successoWhat happened Diciannovesimo al via, primo al traguardo, e il più veloce di tuttiNineteenth at the start, first at the flag, and the fastest of all

Kimi Antonelli won at Monza from nineteenth on the grid, ahead of George Russell and Max Verstappen: the seventh win of his career, the first since Spa, at his thirty-seventh start. Saturday's stopwatch had put him third; on the grid he dropped sixteen places, for a power unit penalty reported in the press.

Pierre Gasly, on pole by sixty thousandths, finished seventh. Two weeks ago at Zandvoort the quickest man on pace had finished second, not this time: here the stopwatch of the green-flag laps and the classification say the same thing. On the median of those laps, stops and neutralisations removed, Antonelli laps in 1:24.976; Verstappen follows at 1:25.419 and Russell at 1:25.511. The top ten are gathered within 1.4 s a lap.

And that median is a floor. Antonelli ran almost half of his clean laps a second and a half or less behind the car ahead, that is in dirty air: those removed, his pace drops to 1:24.595, almost four tenths lower. The winner was the fastest. With a clear track he was more so.

The pace ranking is read with traffic alongside it. When the car in front is within a second and a half, the lap is a chasing lap, and ten drivers ran more than one in three of theirs that way: their median says how fast they went behind someone, not how fast they could have gone.

Consistency tells another story. The steadiest of the top ten is Oscar Piastri, with the laps of his central band within 0.55 s; Russell and Gasly follow at six tenths. Antonelli is the most scattered, 1.27 s, and it is the sign of a race with two paces: one behind someone, one alone.

Lando Norris, fourth at the flag, is the case with the highest share: seven clean laps in ten spent in a tow. Raw, his median of 1:26.060 puts him seventh on pace; his clean-air one, 1:25.785, would put him fourth. Verstappen, third at the finish, has instead the second-best pace of the race even with half his laps in a tow: he has not won since Abu Dhabi 2025, but at Monza on pace he sat ahead of the second Mercedes.

Then there is the check left open at Zandvoort, where Ferrari showed with a clear track a pace the classification did not let show. At Monza it did not happen again. Charles Leclerc stopped on lap two; Lewis Hamilton, sixth, has a median of 1:25.999 that with the chasing laps removed drops only to 1:25.938, more than a second from Antonelli's clean pace. Gasly has the fourth-best pace of the race, 1:25.998, but a second a lap from the Mercedes turns a pole into seventh place.

Che cosa resta apertoWhat remains open Il carburante non è nei dati, e un primo giro pulito non c'èFuel is not in the data, and there is no clean opening lap

Two caveats before closing. The first concerns fuel, which goes down, and the track, which rubbers in: the laps of the second half are worth less than those of the first, and one median over the entire race puts two different paces together. Usually the jump is measured at the first neutralisation; here it came on lap two, and a clean opening phase is missing altogether.

The second caveat is the race as it went: six neutralised laps out of fifty-three, three in the first six and three just after half distance, with a red flag that reset the gaps; and three cars out before the flag, Leclerc after two laps, Alonso after twenty-three, Stroll after twenty-nine.

With these two caveats in front, Monza's pace reads in this order: Antonelli ahead of everyone, and more so still with a clear track; Verstappen second on pace and third at the flag; Norris stronger than the classification shows; Ferrari not. Fuel on board, compound and engine modes stay outside our channels, so it is a comparison at equal tyre age and not a judgement on absolute worth.

The check comes at Madrid: if Mercedes repeats four tenths a lap with a clear track, Monza was the car; if the field closes up again, it was the circuit.
