Hamilton frena più tardi di tutti alla prima variante, e all’apice è sestoHamilton brakes later than anyone at the first chicane, and at the apex he is sixth
At Monza's first chicane the speed collapses from 325 to 71 km/h in a few tens of metres. Hamilton attacks the pedal before anyone else in the same Ferrari as Leclerc, and from there on he pays: two km/h less at the apex, four metres more to get back to full throttle. Whoever brakes twenty metres earlier, instead, comes out first.
Hamilton and Leclerc arrive at the first chicane with the same car, the same wing, the same brake map. Then one of the two keeps his foot down longer.
At turn 1 the speed collapses from 325 to 71 km/h. That is 252 km/h wiped out in a single braking zone. In the whole championship there is no harder braking point. Three quarters of the speed goes in a little more than the length of the pit straight.
In that very short window the two Ferrari drivers do different things. Leclerc gets on the brake 146 metres from the apex; Hamilton at 139. Seven metres between team-mates, which become about twenty if the term of comparison is the median of the field, at 160 metres.
Nobody else goes in that deep. The marker stays there lap after lap, while around him the rest of the grid brakes earlier: repeated with that consistency, a braking point becomes a deliberate choice.
Hamilton sta a 71 km/h, sesto in quella classifica.
The problem is that the bravery under braking shows up nowhere else in the rest of the corner. At the apex of the chicane the field spreads between 68 and 74 km/h: six km/h of spread across sixteen drivers measured, a very narrow band for such a violent corner. Hamilton is at 71 km/h, sixth in that order. Leclerc, who braked seven metres earlier, carries 73.
The best at the apex is Verstappen, at 74 km/h, and his trace tells exactly the opposite story: he brakes at 162 metres, twenty-three metres earlier than Hamilton. He slows calmly, rotates the car while the others are still dumping energy into the discs, and on exit he is the first in the field to get back on the throttle. The metre Hamilton gains under braking is handed back on turn-in, where the downforce has already evaporated and the front axle has to carry the whole rotation on its own.
A limit has to be stated here: we have no temperature or brake load channels. The delayed braking point may be a line built for the second part of the chicane, or the compensation for a front end that doesn't turn; the telemetry says where Hamilton gets to, not why he gets there like that.
On exit the order repeats. Verstappen is back to full throttle 60 metres after the apex, Leclerc at 64, the field median at 65. Hamilton is level with the best, at 60.5 metres.
But he starts from a lower minimum speed, and the same throttle application works off a lower base. The seven metres gained under braking over Leclerc don't come back anywhere.
On one-lap pace all this counts for little: six km/h between the fastest and the slowest at the apex, at a point where the car is travelling at seventy an hour, are worth a handful of thousandths and don't move a row on the grid. The chicane matters on Sunday, when twenty-two cars arrive there in a pack at more than three hundred an hour and whoever goes in deeper with less minimum speed is the one with less margin to play with.
The check comes soon. At the next round, in Madrid, just look at the hardest braking point on the track: if Hamilton remains the latest in the field and outside the top three at the apex, the reading holds. If instead, with the same braking point, he brings the minimum speed up to Leclerc's level, then at Monza the problem was the corner and not the style.
