Turn 3 at Barcelona: wide line or inside kerb in the 245 km/h sweeper
Turn 3 at Montmeló is one of the harshest sections for the front-left tyre. Telemetry analysis shows the comparison between Leclerc's geometric line and Norris's progressive line.
Turn 3 at Barcelona is a long uphill right-hand sweeper taken at more than 245 km/h with lateral acceleration above 4.2 G for almost four continuous seconds. Through this section the front-left tyre takes the highest combined load of the entire Catalan circuit.
Charles Leclerc takes the corner with a tight geometric line, clipping the inside kerb at 248 km/h with a minimum speed 4 km/h higher than Norris.
Lando Norris goes for an alternative approach, letting the McLaren run wide at mid-corner to straighten the line on exit. This wider line reduces steering angle by 4.5 degrees, cutting tread slip.
On the exit towards Turn 4, Norris has a less overheated front tyre, gaining 65 thousandths at the following braking point.
The Turn 3 comparison shows how at Barcelona lap time is the result of the continuous interaction between aerodynamic grip, line and thermal management of the front tyres.
