La pole che Gasly aspettava da dieci stagioni nasce alla prima variante; la domenica Monza è di AntonelliThe pole Gasly had waited ten seasons for is made at the first chicane; on Sunday Monza belongs to Antonelli

A weekend with two stopwatches, each with its own master. Here is in which sector Alpine took its sixty thousandths and with what gesture, why half the lap cannot be read metre by metre, and how much per lap the distance that on Sunday separated the pole from the podium is worth.

Che cosa è successoWhat happened Sessanta millesimi, dieci stagioni dopo la prima partenzaSixty thousandths, ten seasons after the first start

The Monza weekend had two stopwatches. Saturday said Pierre Gasly, first pole of his career, by 0.060 s over George Russell; Sunday said Kimi Antonelli, who won from nineteenth on the grid, sixteen places below his qualifying time.

For Gasly that is ten seasons, six podiums and a single win, right here, in 2020. In qualifying he stopped the clock at 1:21.786 and Russell at 1:21.846, at his hundred-and-ninetieth start. The eve said otherwise: on Friday's long runs the best pace belonged to the Ferraris, with Leclerc and Hamilton level to the thousandth in the comparable window, and Saturday put them fifth and sixth, more than two tenths back. Antonelli, third, was ninety-six thousandths away.

Sunday turned the sheet over: Antonelli ahead of Russell and Verstappen after starting nineteenth, Gasly seventh. The two days are explained by two stopwatches, and the first is the one of the sectors.

Da dove vieneWhere it comes from Il primo settore: stacca diciassette metri più tardi, e riapre il gas primaThe first sector: braking seventeen metres later, and back on the throttle sooner

I settori ufficiali dicono dove.

The official sectors say where. Gasly wins the first by 0.189 s and loses the other two, a hundred and ten thousandths in the second and nineteen in the third. The account closes on the sixty of the pole, and the shape is clear: the whole margin is made before the second chicane, and from there to the line Russell takes back two thirds of it.

At the first chicane the telemetry shows the gesture. Gasly brakes seventeen metres later than Russell, at 161 m from the apex against 178. At the apex he carries two kilometres an hour more, 71 against 69, and is back on full throttle five metres sooner. As a rule whoever brakes later reaches the apex slower; Gasly does not, and he gets going again sooner too.

The straight has nothing to do with it: the top speed is Russell's, 343 km/h against 342, and the first sector contains the start-finish straight. Gasly took the pole where you brake, not where you stretch your legs.

Che cosa resta apertoWhat remains open La traccia che non si allinea, e la pole che vale un settimo postoThe trace that does not line up, and the pole that is worth seventh place

The rest of the lap we do not read metre by metre, and it has to be said why. At the second chicane Gasly's speed channel reads 308 km/h where Russell's reads 109: from there on the two laps do not line up on distance. The cumulative advantage curve that comes out of it swings by two seconds on a pole of sixty thousandths, and it is a measurement artefact, not a reading. The sectors of the official timing remain, and they are enough.

In the race the median of the green laps alone says Antonelli in 1:24.976 and Gasly in 1:26.022: a little more than a second per lap, fourth-best pace in the field for the Alpine, with the top ten within one second and four tenths. Gasly was more consistent, with the central band of his laps inside seven tenths against Antonelli's 1.27 s, but the ranking is made by the median.

The pole by sixty thousandths became seventh place, and the why lies in that second. Where it comes from, our data do not say: of fuel, of compound and of engine modes they know nothing, and pace has to be compared at tyres of equal age, no further. The appeal is Madrid: if Alpine wins again the sector where you brake hard, Monza's Saturday was set-up and car; if it vanishes, it was a lap.
