Gasly prende la pole di Monza in un settore solo, e perde gli altri dueGasly takes Monza pole in one sector, and loses the other two

An Alpine on top at Monza with one km/h less top speed: the sums don't add up, and the clock says where the gap was opened. The first sector is worth eighteen metres of daylight to Gasly; over the rest of the lap Russell takes twelve of them back. What the corner telemetry cannot explain, we report for what it is.

Il confrontoThe comparison Sessanta millesimi, e da dove arrivanoSixty thousandths, and where they come from

Sixty thousandths separate Pierre Gasly's Alpine from George Russell's Mercedes at the end of qualifying at Monza: 1:21.786 against 1:21.846. A thin margin, and nothing unusual so far on a track where the front rows have always been settled in this currency. The sums stop adding up when you look at where that margin was built.

Gasly wins one sector out of three. The first, the one that includes the braking point from the highest speed of the lap and the first chicane, is worth 0.189 s to him: at this track's top speed that is eighteen metres, three and a half car lengths. A chasm, for a Monza qualifying session.

Then the lap changes hands. In the middle sector Russell takes back 0.110 s, and in the third another 0.019: in total 0.129 s given back over the final two thirds, a little over twelve metres. The pole-man comes out of the first chicane with an advantage that is only just enough to survive as far as the line; for the rest of the lap he is the one chasing.

The picture is that of an asymmetric lap. No advantage spread across the lap, no superior car all the way round the ribbon: a gain concentrated in one point and a steady erosion everywhere else.

Dove si separanoWhere they split Due km/h nella variante, e tutto il resto a RussellTwo km/h in the chicane, and all the rest to Russell

The most convenient explanation is that in the first sector the Alpine simply turns better. The apex speeds, corner by corner, make that hard to sustain. In the decisive sector Gasly is ahead in two points only, the two slow braking points of the first chicane, and he gets there with 71 km/h against 69: two km/h, the difference between an entry that is marginally cleaner and one that is marginally more locked up. In the fast corner that closes the sector the two go through at the same speed, to the km/h.

Two km/h at the apex of a chicane do not produce eighteen metres of daylight. Monza's first sector is a little under 1,900 metres long and is almost entirely full throttle: that gain came in a phase the minimum speeds do not photograph, between the run-up, the braking and the reapplication of throttle.

What exactly separates them there, our feed does not say: the load, tyre temperature and delivery channels are missing, and without those, attributing the character of the lap to the car or to the driver's hand would be a supposition dressed up as a measurement. We write it as it is.

Over the rest of the lap the direction reverses with regularity. At the apex of the corners in the middle sector and the final one it is almost always Russell carrying more speed, and not at one isolated point: in every corner where the comparison is legible. The figure that closes the argument comes from the outright session standings: the best second sector of the entire qualifying session is Russell's. That piece of track he won against everybody.

Chi paga cosaWho pays what Il conto alla linea del traguardoThe bill at the finish line

At top speed the two cars are indistinguishable, and if anything the sign favours the one behind: 343 km/h for Russell, 342 for Gasly. Monza pole, this year, does not come with a set-up that runs longer on the straight: it comes in spite of the straight.

Translated into distance, the margin thins further still. At the speed at which the line is crossed, a little over 300 km/h, sixty thousandths are worth about five metres: barely a car length. For Sunday it is not a cushion, it is a place on the front row and nothing else.

For Gasly, tenth in the championship with 44 points, it is the day that is worth a season. For Russell, second at 59 from team-mate Antonelli, it is the second box on a track where the piece that dominates, the middle sector of cornering speeds and load, is also the one that decides pace over the distance.

The question that matters stays open: what really happened in those opening 1,900 metres. It would take a fine breakdown of the first sector, with the braking separated from the run-up, to understand whether the Alpine's advantage was born under braking or was already established before. This weekend's channels are not enough to write it.
